The decentralized identity startup Civic was showcasing their innovative 'IdentityVerification' technology with the help of beer vending machines at the SXSW Conference in Austin, Texas.

The blockchain-powered company Civic Secure Identity, could be found at booth #1537, at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, where they showcased three vending machines selling local staples, Shiner Bock and Austin Amber beer.

Civic is planing to roll out their $15,000 vending machine that can verify a user’s age and accept payment via crypto, officially later this year. The vending machines are now available for pre-order.

According to Civic's website, anonymous age verification is now possible for vending machines.

'Your customer walks up to the vending machine, uses the Civic App to scan the QR code and prove their age at a fraction of a cost to you. Done, now they can buy the product.'

The company provides multi-factor authentication without a username, password, third-party authenticator, or physical hardware token, through their decentralized architecture with the blockchain and biometrics on the mobile device.

According to the Director of Marketing at Civic, Titus Capilnean, it was the first time Civic ran sales and identity verification at once with the general public.

Capilnean further explained that once they got the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission to be on board with this happening, the SXSW organizers felt comfortable with the product as well.

For the Beverage Commission, it didn’t matter at all if humans or machines did the proper verification. 'The priority', Capilnean said, 'was somehow making sure that people under 21 weren’t drinking.'

The marketing director said that the company is already looking to collaborate with places where alcohol distribution could be improved. 'To take pressure off servers, sporting events and bars, for example, might be places that could use vending machines to verify age.'

According to Capilnean music festivals could present Civic with the most immediate opportunities.
