People have been paying Bitcoin to send some strange messages into space

The latest novelty doing the rounds amongst the Bitcoin technical community is using the apex cryptocurrency to send messages into space which are then broadcast out of a satellite and transmitted around the world, Coindesk reports.

By typing a message, paying a few cents in Bitcoin and clicking send, anyone is now able to beam messages into space before having it blanket the earth. This is all thanks to Blockstream satellite, a rather eccentric project that began over a year ago. As peculiar as the project sounds, the ultimate goal is to make Bitcoin accessible to people who don’t have access to the internet.

With the launch of, sending messages has become much easier. The website allows users to pay a small fee (the default being three cents in testnet Bitcoin) to send a message via those satellites around the world. Some of the messages being sent are quite interesting.

One message appears to be an unknown person's diary entry containing their thoughts on life and Bitcoin. “So here I am, left my job, I have some money to keep me up and I’m building my first raspberry pi lightning node, and broadcasting messages from satellites. Still feels surreal at times,” the message reads.

"Still hard to grasp the fact, that I’m blanketing a big part of the Earth with my message, on demand, instantly. I wonder, does anybody [read this message]?” the person wrote the next day.

According to Twitter user @notgrubles, a Blockstream satellite user who frequently tweets about the technology, one user even sent a poem dedicated to the lightning network.
