Teen abducted and held for 15 bitcoin ransom

A 13 year old teen has been abducted while playing with his friends and is being held for ransom believed to be 15 bitcoins.

Thirteen year old Kathlego Marite of Mpumalanga, South Africa was kidnapped on Sunday while playing with his friends and has still not been found, News24 reports.

A letter has since been received demanding a ransom of 15 bitcoin and advised the family not to inform the Police of the ransom.

The family admitted to not even knowing what bitcoin is. However, it is clear the criminals know that a bitcoin transaction involves no bank accounts, bags of cash and is anonymous for the most part.

This is the second time in 1 week bitcoin has made headlines in South Africa following last weeks launch of the first crypto ATM in Johannesburg.

The family are working with authorities and the boy remains missing while a plan is formulated.
