Ethereum's new 1000x Serenity upgrade coming soon, says Vitalik

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has claimed that the network's new upgrade, Serenity, is coming soon. He was giving a talk at a recent Ethereum developers' event in Prague, as reported by Breaker Mag.

Referring to his vision for the Ethereum blockchain to be "the world computer", Vitalik said that Serenity is "the world computer as it’s really meant to be, and not a smartphone from 1999 that can process only 20 transactions a second." Formerly known simply as Ethereum 2.0, the new upgraded network should be capable of handling up to 1000 transactions per second.

Ethereum's scaling issues will be tackled primarily with sharding of the blockchain, enabling the task of verifying transactions to be shared by different nodes. In a significant move, Ethereum will also be switching from a proof-of-work mining model to proof-of-stake.

Another developer speaking after Vitalik said that the team is working on "onboarding the next one million developers" to the Ethereum network, driving home just how ambitious their plans to upscale the network are.
