Cryptocurrency firms top the list of 250 most promising fintech companies

From a pool of 4000 contenders, covering the breadth and width of the global fintech industry comes 250 most promising companies.

CB Insights has released this year Fintech 250: a list comprising the most promising “insurgent startups” of 2018. From capital markets and wealth management to digital banking; these are the companies which will transform the landscape of fintech.

Applicants and nominees came in their thousands, whittled down to just 250. encouragingly, albeit unsurprisingly, crypto firms sit at the top of this refined list.

Under the "wallets and transfer", category sits notable crypto companies, Revolut,, Bitpesa, and KakaoPay.

Also representing blockchain startups are Ripple, Chain, Factom, Brave, Coinbase, Robinhood and Bitflyer.

In order to make the cut, companies undergo a vigorous section process based on multiple factors including business model analysis, momentum in the market as well as reviewing data submitted by the companies themselves. Cb Insights also uses an algorithm known as a mosaic score which measures the overall health and potential growth of these companies.

The report mentions that 30 of these startups are “unicoins” an exclusive club with the mandatory requirement of reaching $1 billion or more in valuation. Out of the listed cryptocurrency firms, Coinbase and Robinhood claim access to the club with valuations of $1.6b and $5.6b respectively.
