Popular YouTubers, TheHodgetwins have reportedly lost 1,500 EOS ($8,500) after downloading a sketchy cryptocurrency wallet from the iOS store and depositing their EOS into it, Bitcoin Exchange Guide reports.
TheHodgetwins have almost 4 million subscribers while their crypto channel, CryptoTwins has around 18,000. The two claim that hackers made off with their EOS almost immediately after depositing it into the wallet.
The pair downloaded the shady wallet, called EOSIO Wallet Explorer from the iOS store. Apple touts strict security on their app store, claiming that each app is manually reviewed.
The twins describe the situation on the TheHodgetwins account, stating:
“I have been [using EOSIO Wallet Explorer] on my iPhone to hold my EOS. I noticed these three transactions…totaling 1,500 EOS tokens. I want to be clear I did not authorize these transactions, not sure how this could have happened. I filed a claim with ECAF…but have not received a response yet.”
The EOS block explorer shows the three transactions that were allegedly illegitimate, including one for 650 EOS, one for 773.6 EOS, and a final transaction of 76.8 EOS, totaling 1,500 EOS.
While the EOSIO wallet appears to be real, launching just weeks after the EOS mainnet launch in July, there has been trouble with the wallet. The Next Web first noticed four separate complaints with similar allegations, stating that EOSIO Wallet Explorer misappropriated users’ funds.
