Walmart plans to build delivery robots using blockchain technology

The retail giant, Walmart, applies for a patent for a technology to build autonomous robots that make use of blockchain technology.

According to the official patent document by the US Patent & Trademark Office, the technology applied by Walmart, which is mentioned as “A system for in-field authentication of autonomous electronic devices” will use “blockchain keys” for authentication which the data will be taken from a distributed blockchain database.

The robots are meant for delivering packages to customers purposes, which may be one of Walmart’s efforts to stay competitive with the online retail company, Amazon.

As reported by Cryptocoinjunky, this kind of system is vulnerable to compromise by hackers, which is the main reason why Walmart uses distributed ledger technology for security against such incidents.

It is also reported that Walmart has applied a couple of times for patents that use blockchain technology previously. The first was for a system to manage package delivery hubs and the other was to track delivery drones that transmit packages from physical stores to customers.
