Artist Ai Weiwei uses Ethereum token to create work of art

Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has teamed up with Irish artist Kevin Abosch to create a new artwork using an ERC-20 token. Entitled PRICELESS, the work is a commentary on the value of human life, and in particular the treatment of refugees.

In an interview with Motherboard, Weiwei explained that "[blockchain] is not about the technology, but an opportunity to set up a new system that could dismantle the old system, or at least offer a new possibility for question the existing system and the potential to create a new system outside of the established one."

The concept artwork primarily consists of two ERC-20 tokens, created on the Ethereum blockchain and known as PRICELESS, or PRCLS. One of these tokens will be forever unavailable to anyone, while the other is freely available and intended to be indefinitely divisible, so everyone in the world can own a share of it.

Part of the message is that the smallest fraction of the crypto, in the hands of a single individual, will be worth as much as the entire project. The artists are hoping to distribute the tokens to academics, and other institutions who could contribute to a conversation aboud the concept of 'value' in modern society.

According to Abosch, "Our intention was not to create a marketable token—what will happen with the token over time will reveal itself to us...People can do what they want with it, but it would be nice if the conversation doesn’t die".
