Facebook shifts focus on the blockchain

Facebook announced it will shift the responsibilities of its longtime executives to focus on the blockchain. Apparently, an entire team will be dedicated to the emerging technology.

David Marcus, the executive formerly in charge of Messenger, will take the lead of this new team. He said, “After nearly four unbelievably rewarding years leading Messenger, I have decided it was time for me to take on a new challenge. I’m setting up a small group to explore how to best leverage Blockchain across Facebook, starting from scratch.”

It is no secret that Facebook is still recovering after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It is therefor not too hard to imagine, that they are taking its users’ criticism over data and privacy seriously. Being open to the idea of leveraging the blockchain to give users full control over their own data, is definitely a step in the right direction to restore trust in their services.

Zuckerberg said: "I’m interested to go deeper and study the positive and negative aspects of these technologies, and how best to use them in our services.”

Will Facebook ever give full control over users' own data?
