Watch Dogs: Legion features crypto as in-game currency

Ubisoft's Watch Dogs: Legion is the latest media property to prominently feature cryptocurrencies. The upcoming game will depict a post-Brexit version of London where crypto has replaced GBP.

Watch Dogs: Legion is the third game in the franchise, which allows players to roam around a dynamic GTA-style open-world environment. In previous entries, the protagonist was a member of a hacker organization similar to Anonymous, known as DedSec. This latest game allows players to take control of almost any character in the world.

Creative director Clint Hocking told The Verge that the game depicts London during a "time of massive social change". In an interview with Game Informer, design director Kent Hudson said that the city "is seeing her downfall. It’s a time of social crisis: AI is devastating the economy, the pound has collapsed and is being replaced by cryptocurrency, organized crime has taken a resurgence."

It's unclear exactly what role crypto will have in the gameplay, but this is definitely a good chance for a huge new audience to be informed (or reminded) of its potential benefits. Towards the start of 2019, online gaming phenomenon Fortnite briefly enabled gamers to pay for rewards with crypto, but this feature was quickly removed. Ethereum (ETH) also gained some positive sci-fi exposure back in April, with its featuring as a plot point in Netflix's The OA.
