I don't know what Bitcoin is, says Brazil's president Jair Bolsonaro

In a recent interview, Brazillian president Jair Bolsonaro made some remarks that gave an idea of his stance on crypto. The controversial head of state told radio host Ratinho "I do not know what Bitcoin is", as reported by CoinTelegraph.

Taking office at the start of 2019, Bolsonaro has continued to face criticism both at home and abroad due to his hardline policies and extreme views on many social issues. The former military officer has been a vocal opponent of LGBT rights, abortion, and secularism, as well as the rights of Brazil's indigenous population.

In this recent interview, Bolsonaro was defending a move recently made by his Minister of Women, Family and Human Rights, Damares Alves. She took the decision to suspend a $11 million project aimed at developing a cryptocurrency for the country's indigenous people to make use of. It was a joint initiative between the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI) and the Federal Fluminense University (UFF).

Another participant on the show apparently asked Bolsonaro if he knew what Bitcoin was, which he claimed he didn't. A clarification was apparently issued later, where he stated that BTC was a digital currency.

Towards the end of May, the establishment of a commission for the regulation of crypto was ordered by the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil, Deputy Rodrigo Maia. The commission will be made up of 34 members.
